Application deadline: 30 November 2009 or until filled
Start date: 1 March 2010 (negotiable)
Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral scholarship position at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) to undertake research on the ecology of coral reef ecosystems that is relevant to the NSF-funded Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research (MCR LTER) site (http://mcr.lternet.edu). The Moorea Coral Reef LTER addresses direct, interactive and indirect effects of disturbances and press drivers on the structure and function of the coral reef ecosystem that surrounds Moorea in the Society Islands of French Polynesia; the MCR is seeking an ecologist broadly interested in issues pertaining to reef resilience and/or global climate forcing. The successful candidate will work closely with RJ Schmitt (MCR Lead PI) and SJ Holbrook (MCR Co-PI) at UCSB, and will interact substantively with PJ Edmunds and RC Carpenter at nearby CSU Northridge (MCR Co-PIs). Candidates are expected to have strong conceptual, empirical and quantitative skills in ecology; have a publication record commensurate with their career stage; and have strong field-based experience in subtidal, benthic marine ecosystems. The individual will based at UC Santa Barbara and will travel overseas for fieldwork in Moorea for 2 – 3 months per year. The successful candidate will have experience conducting subtidal research on scuba, and will need to be a certified AAUS research diver for the project.
Applicants should submit (1) a cover letter in which they describe their research training and interests, (2) a CV, and (3) the name and full contact information for three references. Please submit all materials electronically to Dr. Andrew Brooks, Deputy Director of the Moorea Coral Reef LTER at brooks@msi.ucsb.edu with “MCR Postdoc” as the subject line.
