DRIVE-IN – Distributed Routing and Infotainment through Vehicular Inter-Networking.
A PhD position (BI position) is available at the “Instituto de Telecomunicações” – University of Porto as part of the Project CMU-PT/NGN/0052/2008, “DRIVE-IN – Distributed Routing and Infotainment through Vehicular Inter-Networking”.
The goal of the DRIVE-IN project is to investigate how vehicle-to-vehicle communication can improve the user experience and the overall efficiency of vehicle and road utilization, collaborating closely with the partner university Carnegie Mellon, and working with leading industry partners.
1. Position Description
Investigation of the opportunities enabled by real-time communication in the area of vehicular inter-networking as well as concepts, methodologies and technologies developed in geo-optimized VANET protocols, intelligent and collaborative car routing and VANET applications and services.
The selected candidate will work in the Computer Science Department at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.
The position will be granted for initially one year with a monthly maintenance stipend of 980 € according to the 2009 regulations with possible extension. It is anticipated that the candidate will apply for continuation of the position with his or her own proposal at FCT, the Portuguese Science Foundation.
2. Preferred Requirements
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Network Engineering or similar field: The applicant must have the necessary qualifications for being admitted into the PhD program.
- Proficiency level of the English language.
- Experience in the following areas:
Intelligent Transport Systems, Routing and Network protocols, Simulation and test-bed implementation.

4. Evaluation criteria
Selection of the candidates will be performed by evaluation of the submitted documents, followed by an interview of the top candidates, taking into consideration their educational performance, professional experience, merit and motivation of the applicants.
